Panel technology enables simultaneous genetic screening for all the diseases and traits related to a particular area of concern while eliminating those that are not relevant, thus maximizing both the efficiency of learning about your DNA and greatly increasing the usefulness of the results.

Panel screening is a significant advancement in the field of genetic testing and analysis because, for the first time, screening for both common and rare diseases can be included in a single package and accessed all at once. In the past, widespread screening for many of the rare diseases (often referred to as “orphan diseases” because of their rarity and the unfortunate lack of resources directed toward treating and preventing them) was discouraged because of cost and time. Now, however, we can start to include hundreds of rare diseases in panels and begin to identify people who are carriers of or affected by them. As Dr. Colby writes in chapter three of Outsmart Your Genes, "Through the use of genetic screening panels we can start to decrease the incidence of rare diseases while we concurrently battle the common ones, and orphan diseases will finally have found a home."

Click on the blue sample panels below to see examples of what they target. Panels listed below in black can be found in Outsmart Your Genes. The Pythia Approach can be applied to any panel.
